Hello and welcome back to the Simple and Intentional Podcast. This episode, I want to talk about those quiet ways that you are undervaluing yourself. Our self-worth impacts so much of our lives we don't even realize. And I like to preface self-worth every time I bring it up because this isn't about having extremely low self-esteem. I don't want you to turn off this episode and think that's not me. I think all of us can build our self-worth. It's impacted by so many things, and it's developed over time through the beliefs we've grown with, our childhood, the messages we've gotten about our identity and who we are, the experiences we've had, and the decisions that we've made and the actions we've taken have either built or kept our self-worth at a low level. So I know I've said this before, but I will say it again. Self-worth isn't about how you feel about yourself, it's how you treat yourself. And self-worth is not something that should be variable. This isn't like self-esteem that can get impacted by things. You get up on a stage and you speak in front of a group of people and someone laughs, and your self-esteem gets impacted. But your self-worth stays steady because inherently you know your worth, you know your value, no matter what happens outside of yourself. Self-worth shows up in what you carry, what you tolerate, and what you put last, which often tends to be the self-care, it's our environment, it's time for ourselves, that kind of thing ends up being last on the list. And likely it's just unintentionally evolved that way because maybe, like me, you didn't even know about the concept of self-worth or think about the actions you were taking and how it impacted your self-worth. So now that we're bringing this to light, we can start to think about the ways that this shows up and what are some things we can do that will eliminate this invisible pattern of behavior that weighs us down. And what I hear from a lot of women is they're the one that's always remembering everything. They're the ones that are keeping things running. And they rarely sit down without thinking what they have to do next or what they've forgotten. And somewhere in all of that have lost their identity and their own life. And for a lot of you, what you've learned is that your value is in how much you carry, how much you do, not in who you are. So let's talk about clutter. Clutter is a visual representation of what you allow yourself to tolerate. Like I said, it's a visual and it shows how much you're caring. It shows that you are beyond your capacity, that you're exhausted, that you're making too many decisions on your own, and that you can't do all of this by yourself. It also shows the ways that we chase dopamine when you are feeling this way perpetually and you're just looking for a glimmer of something that makes you feel good, a little perk in the day where you get to deserve something because you're caring so much all the time. However, this tends to backfire because it just adds to the clutter and it doesn't really fulfill you in the long term. It gives you that little boost in the moment, which is all you really have energy or capacity for. You know, it's not doing the workout that would make you feel better. It's lying down on the couch and scrolling because you're totally exhausted. It's you being perpetually last on the list and not having that space to take care of yourself. And that rest feels like something you have to earn. Once you get everything done on the list, then you can rest. Or maybe you identify with this one, constantly being productive because your worth is tied to how much you're producing. There's no space to think or feel. And so that clutter again builds up in the environment because there's a lot of mindless decisions. There's a lot of just keep going, keep going, keep going, because you can't allow yourself to pause. And the reason that I'm talking about this is because it's pretty normal. A lot of women have been conditioned to feel this way. You know, maybe we saw it in our parents' relationship or our mother's behavior. You know, there's a lot of societal messages that get ingrained in us about caretaking. And women have been carrying these roles for a long time. And we get praised for being the one who can handle it all. It gets reinforced because we see, you know, these really well-organized homes or somebody like Martha Stewart who's mapping out a garden and baking muffins and folding a fitted sheet all in one day. So when we compare ourselves against that bar, we feel we fall flat. So we just keep going and going and going and going until there's nothing left for us. So, how do we shift this? We have to start taking actions that support our self-worth. And that starts with awareness. You have to start noticing what you're tolerating, you have to start noticing the clutter, the overcommitment, all the urgency all the time, the productivity, the lack of rest, the lack of self-care. You have to start noticing the ways that this is showing up and then start small. Reduce one little thing. Delegate something to someone in your family, say no and set a boundary to something, delay making a decision about something, doing that workout instead of doing some chore, you know, making decisions to put yourself first and recognizing when this is too much for me right now. It's following through on those actions. You know, it is doing the workout, it's eating the meal that's gonna nourish you. It's taking the time to go to bed on time and closing those loops, like following through the whole way because this builds the self-trust that we need in order to continue building self-worth. You know, this can be taking one moment of space each day, sitting without doing anything, going for a walk, just pausing and giving yourself a little transition time between things. This could be really radical for some of you. I know that feeling of just constantly being on the treadmill and having to do the next thing and the next thing and the next thing, and feeling like a failure when you don't get there. So taking that pause and just creating space for yourself is huge. And talk to yourself with kindness and honesty and let go of the pressure. Instead of saying, I should be able to do this, try saying this is a lot. No wonder I feel like this. And remember that when you start to value yourself differently, you stop accepting things that drain you. So this goes for your space. You stop allowing the clutter to build up, you make space, you create a a calm and peaceful bedroom for yourself, clear counters so that you can make food in a way that doesn't feel stressful or like you're fighting for space. You make decisions that support your future self and what you want going forward. It's really a very powerful identity shift saying, I don't have to carry everything, I deserve to be supported, I'm allowed to rest, I'm worthy of dot dot dot. And so I want you to just think about what are some things that you can start to notice this week. Where can you start creating more space for yourself in your own life? Where can you lay things down? And how can you support yourself and start finding those little actions you can take that are gonna help build and build and build. Because that's exactly it. Self-worth is not something you're going to find. It's something you practice moment by moment, day by day, and how you treat yourself, how you talk to yourself, the habits and routines you build. And it doesn't need to be a really big step. Remember, these are little steps, things that you can do sustainably and regularly, consistently and steadily, so that you can build the new thoughts, you can build the new habits. It's all about the repetition. So we want to find the things that you can do that are gonna allow you to get that repetition in there so that you can build the new ways of doing, the new ways of thinking and the new identity of somebody who sees herself as worthy, who doesn't tolerate the things that she's been tolerating. I really want you to see this and how it shows up in your home, in your time, and your energy. And if this is resonating with you and you're realizing that you've been caring way too much, that you don't have this time, space, energy in your life that you would like to have and you want to start letting some of it go. This is exactly the way that I support women. I work with women one-on-one. I'm starting a group program. So if you're interested in that, you can send me a message on Instagram. You can send me an email. I would love to hear from you. Even if you just have questions or you want to connect, I really love getting to connect with my audience. If that's not for you right now, I have a free Facebook group where I do periodic live sessions that you can get little snippets of ideas and take action on. There's also a way to ask questions and post in that group if you want to. Or if you're more into self-study and you want to kind of dive in and try something on your own, I recently released a mini course on sentimental clutter and how to get rid of that. It's a short course, very concise, with very actionable steps that are you can go through over and over and over again. But it's going to give you the framework on how to approach your sentimental clutter, how to get rid of it, and how to bring it into your life. So if you're interested in that, I will leave the link in the show notes. All the links will be in the show notes. If you have any questions, again, feel free to DM me on Instagram, send me an email. I love to hear from people and connect with you. So thank you so much for listening. I hope you found this episode helpful. Self-worth really is a core concept that I have integrated into the work I do because I see it as fundamental to making these shifts that I know you're all after. So please listen, re-listen as you need to, and again, reach out with questions if you have them.
